"Top tips for Supplement Success" (Brainstorm health)

Getting started: Lab Analysis, Probiotics & Histamine Intolerance

Probiotics

  • Typical Dosage: 10-20 billion CFU daily

  • Evidence: A healthy gut microbiome is critical for immune function. Probiotics help maintain this balance and can reduce the frequency of infections, particularly in the gut and respiratory tract

"Probiotics: The most comprehensive meta-analysis to date reveals that children with ASD are more than four-fold more likely to develop GI problems. Probiotics can be helpful when supplemented at the right stage of the gut health programme. Rotating probiotic strains and complementing them with prebiotics are key to achieving long-term gains. In terms of individual probiotic strains, the following have been in the spotlight with regard to helping specific autistic symptoms.

  1. a) Lactobacillus rhamnosus, which has been shown to reduce anxiety and stress-related behaviours in children with autism. It has also been found to improve social and communicative behaviours in autistic children.

  2. b) Bifidobacterium longum has been studied for its potential to reduce gastrointestinal symptoms in children with autism. It has been found to reduce inflammation in the gut and improve social behaviours in autistic children.

  3. c) Bifidobacterium breve has been found to reduce gut inflammation, gastrointestinal symptoms, and anxiety in autistic children.

Autistic children often have nutrient deficiencies affecting their physical and mental health and well-being. By supplementing with the nutrients mentioned above, as well as ensuring a diet rich in these nutrients, parents and caregivers can help to support their child’s development and well-being. It is important to note that supplementation should always be taken under the guidance of a healthcare professional and in conjunction with a balanced diet." -Brainstorm Health

If you are doing this I would recommend not mixing it with any other supplements  for 3 months so that you get a good understanding of what is workng.  Also if your child is less than 80 lbs I would cut the dose in half.  If your child is very small (under 5) I would give them 1/3 of the dose….These results were based on dosages given to teenagers and adults.

The results of this research are so strong that I would recommend this as a first approach if hyperactivity is a current issue for your child.

Histamine PRODUCING probiotic strains to watch out for...

Lactobacillus casei

Lactobacillus fermentum

Lactobacillus Bulgaricus

Streptococcus thermophilus

Lactobacillus delbrueckii

Lactobacillus helveticus

Bacillus Licheniformis

Low histamine probiotic strains that are better...

Bifidobacterium infantis

Lactobacillus gasseri

Bifidobacterium breve

Bifidobacterium bifidum

Lactobacillus salivarius

Lactobacillus rhamnosus

What is Glutathione and what does it do?

In a nut shell...it can reduce neuroinflammation, help the detoxification process and bring calm to the nervous system..but here is some science.

Glutathione levels can affect neuroinflammation in several ways:

  • Glutathione depletion
A depletion of glutathione can lead to neuroinflammation, glial activation, and subtle cognitive deficits.

  • Glutathione administration
Administering glutathione can reduce inflammatory responses.

  • Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs)
GSTs, particularly GSTM1, can promote proinflammatory signaling in astrocytes and microglia activation.

  • Pharmacological elevation of glutathione
Pharmacological elevation of glutathione can inhibit neuroinflammation and oxidative injury induced by status epilepticus.

Glutathione is a potent antioxidant that helps detoxify the body by conjugating with toxins. It can eliminate heavy metals, fat-soluble toxins, and other environmental toxins.

Astrocytes and neurons have a metabolic interaction that's critical for glutathione synthesis. Astrocytes transfer a cysteine precursor to neurons, which upregulates GSH synthesis in the neurons.

Which Supplements?
Path 1 (Probiotics & Protandim)

Tips for kids taking Protandim:

  • Mix with peanut butter and honey

  • dissolve in small amount of water overnight until mushy and mix in a smoothie with fruit, honey and anything else they can eat/drink

  • Dissolve and mix with Strong fruit juice also works sometimes but would need to be a small amount and not full of fillers like sugar, corn syrup etc.. (grape is strong). It's more like medicine at this point because you just down it quickly.

  • Use a calendar.. when they have taken it daily for a month you could get them something they've wanted or take them somewhere for a fun event.

  • They'll still receive the individual benefits of the 5 herbs but more because activating the Nrf2 pathway is happening at the same time as the work that each herb is offering.

  • There can be some detox but we want that. Especially if kids have been on toxic medications for years. It will look like more time in the bathroom. It usually takes 2 weeks to detox.

  • At 80lbs you can use a full pill. We've started kids on 1/4-3/4 before so just try to see what they will take (if it's tricky to get them to take it).

  • It's fat soluble so they need to take with food.

  • And they don't need to take any of the 5 herbs it contains. So no tumeric, ashwaghanda, bacopa, milk thistle or green tea extract. The synergy of these in these exact amounts is where the power is...if you add to any of this while the body is metabolizing Protandim Nrf2, it will throw off the synergy. And studies have proven the activation of the Nrf2 via Protandim is 18x more powerful than taking those herbs individually. So, if someone is taking turmeric for inflammation, they should stop and take Protandim and they'll receive more benefit. (the same for ashwaghanda- which has become more trendy now because of anxiety issues globally.)

Path 2 (Probiotics & other supplements)

VITAMIN D

(See link for  Vitamin D testing in referral section of this page )

OMEGA 3

  • Typical Dosage: 500-1,000 mg of combined EPA and DHA daily

  • Evidence: Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oil or sourced from pasture-raised beef, are essential for reducing inflammation and supporting overall immune health. These fats are also important for brain function and development.

Some good options to choose from:

https://healf.com/en-uk/products/ancestral-supplements-wild-caught-fish-eggs?variant=44991653675247&frt=17&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAxea5BhBeEiwAh4t5KxwGh5iNlCF5v9KI30KTFsWM0n7ZU-yGBryQQ1wCsxfdKdRTewuMRBoCD18QAvD_BwE&selling_plan=5744197871

Nordic Naturals and `Nutri Advanced are good brands and they have multiple options for ways to take Omegas...as liquid, gummies etc.  There are other good brands out there too!

https://www.nordic.com/

https://amzn.to/3CyBgLe

*If your child tends to bruise easily watch the dosage of Omegas...if they start to bruise more, cut back on the dose.  It thins the blood in the same way that other ingredients like green tea and caffeine do so you just need to be aware.

Read if your child may struggle with histamine intolerance:  https://www.brainstormhealth.co.uk/2024/06/do-fish-oils-make-your-childs-symptoms-worse/

And if so....use this instead of Omega 3:  https://amzn.to/3CuMIaB

MAGNESIUM

  • Typical Dosage: 100-200 mg daily

  • Evidence: Magnesium supports many bodily functions, including immune response and stress management.
Supplementation can help improve sleep and reduce anxiety, which are important for maintaining a healthy immune system

Supplements:  (Use Glycinate or Threonate because they will cross the blood/brain barrier)

ZINC

  • Zinc levels can be measured in the blood, but it is safe to give 20-25 mg. of zinc daily to your child without first doing a blood test.

*Don't take Zinc & Iron at the same time

IRON

Even if  you suspect iron is deficient, do not give more than a bottle unless you have had a blood test to determine iron deficiency.

Some Symptoms of nutrient deficiency

Magnesium deficiency:  poor focus, irritability and anxiety, apathy, mood swings, fatigue, and poor sleep.

Iron deficiency: poor sleep and restless leg syndromes as well as poor appetite, shortness of breath, lack of healthy energy, pica, heart palpitations and pale skin.

Zinc deficiency: poor appetite, digestive issues, allergies, sleep problems, white spots on nails, diarrhoea, weight loss, fatigue, low immunity, dermatitis, and visual problems.

Omega 3 fatty acid deficiency: excessive thirst, frequent urination, food allergies or intolerances, poor focus and tendency for autoimmune conditions.

Top Tips:

Take it slow!

This is a marathon not a sprint.  Introduce one supplement at a time and take it for at least sa couple of weeks before you introduce another.

If one form (liquid, gummy, etc) doesn't work, don't give up!  Be patient and try more ways.  I'm here for advice....just ask!

I am often asked "What would you do?"

The truth is that it is very PER CHILD...but i would lean towards doing  the Epson Salt Baths from the beginning, then the 3 strains of probiotic trial, then Protandim, then introduce other supplements slowly starting with the Vit D analysis because it's an inexpensive way to get a good lab analysis and good protocol.  Then Omegas. Then Magnesium & Zinc.  This will take a few months to build up in their system but by the time you are through a programme with Map & Compass you would have made a significant shift in their nutrients from supplements.

AND!  In terms of their diet I would start with regulating their blood sugar...but that's another video I haven't made yet!  But cutting back on sugar and adding protein can begin right away and can make an incredible difference immediately. Don't underestimate what this simple change can do.

This is just a "starter kit" ....you need a nutritonal therapist to truly help you along according to your child's needs biochemically. But for those of you who want to do this before you go down that road, these are some very basic paths you can take along the way.

Epsom Salt Bath Directions for liver support and relaxation

Epsom salt baths are an excellent way to support detoxification.

Start slowly and build up to full amounts, noting that an increase in symptoms may be a sign of a detox reaction and you can decrease amounts and slowly build up as symptoms resolve.

Start with 1/2 cup Epsom salts + 1/4 cup sodium bicarbonate

Add to a warm bath and soak for at least 20 minutes 4 x week

Increase slowly (adding in 1/4 cup increments) to a total of 2 cups epsom salts + 1/2 cup sodium bicarbonate

Decrease if symptoms flare

You can also add in 1/2 cup of magnesium flakes once you feel your child is used to the baths.

Where to buy:

epsomsalts.co.uk

sells large bags of both Epsom salts and sodium bicarbonate.

You will get through a lot so please buy in bulk.

www.naturaldispensary.co.uk shop sells BetterYou Magnesium flakes

You can purchase other places or at your local health food but don't buy any with the scents...you just need the unscented, plain versions.

The liver is a major organ responsible for many things, one of the most important being detoxification.

Some research on supplements

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Overview: Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are crucial for brain health and function. These essential fats are found in high concentrations in the brain and are integral to maintaining cell membrane fluidity and facilitating neurotransmitter function. Increasing evidence suggests that omega-3 supplementation can help reduce symptoms of ADHD, including inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.

Evidence Base:

Meta-Analysis 1:

      • Study Details: A meta-analysis of 16 clinical trials with a total of 1,514 participants aged 4-18 years.

      • Results: Participants showed improvements in hyperactivity, attention, and cognitive function.

      • Duration: Studies ranged from 8 to 24 weeks.

      • Dosage: 1-2 grams/day, typically containing both EPA and DHA.

      • Conclusion: Omega-3 supplementation has been consistently associated with moderate improvements in ADHD symptoms, supporting its role as a beneficial addition to dietary management.

Study 2:

      • Study Details: A study with 200 children aged 5-14 years.

      • Results: Significant improvements in attention and behaviour.

      • Duration: 12 weeks.

      • Dosage: 1.5 grams/day.

      • Conclusion: Reinforces the potential of omega-3s in improving

Summary Conclusion: Omega-3 fatty acids have a solid evidence base supporting their use in managing ADHD symptoms. Their role in brain health and function is well-established, and supplementation appears to offer moderate benefits in reducing hyperactivity and improving attention. Given their safety profile and additional health benefits, omega-3s are a valuable component of a comprehensive ADHD management strategy.

Nutrient Balance is key for ADHD:  https://preview.mailerlite.com/b7x5i4

Zinc and Magnesium Supplements

Overview: Zinc and magnesium are essential minerals that play significant roles in brain function and development. Zinc is involved in neurotransmitter regulation, neuronal signalling, and brain plasticity. Magnesium is crucial for neurotransmitter release and energy production in the brain. Deficiencies in these minerals are often linked to ADHD, and supplementation can help improve related symptoms.

Evidence Base:

Study 1:

      • Study Details: Research involving 200 children aged 6-12 years with ADHD, divided into groups receiving either zinc, magnesium, or a placebo.

      • Results: Significant improvement in inattention and hyperactivity symptoms in the supplement groups.

      • Duration: 10 weeks.

      • Dosage: Zinc 20 mg/day, Magnesium 200 mg/day (magnesium glycinate).

      • Conclusion: Correcting deficiencies in zinc and magnesium showed a positive impact on managing ADHD symptoms, highlighting the importance of these minerals in neurological function (MDPI) (nutraingredients.com).

Study 2:

      • Study Details: A study with 180 children aged 5-12 years.

      • Results: Magnesium sulphate supplementation improved hyperactivity and impulsivity.

      • Duration: 8 weeks.

      • Dosage: Magnesium sulphate 300 mg/day.

      • Conclusion: Supports the role of magnesium in ADHD symptom management (MDPI) (nutraingredients.com).

Summary Conclusion: Zinc and magnesium supplementation can be crucial for children with ADHD, especially those with documented deficiencies. Research supports their role in reducing inattention and hyperactivity. Choosing the right form and dosage of these supplements, such as magnesium glycinate or sulphate, is important for effectiveness and tolerance.

(PDF) Decreased cortical Nrf2 gene expression in autism and its relationship to thiol and cobalamin status

“Intervening and treating oxidative stress is one of the most effective techniques for improving the pathogenetic status of ASD patients.”

2-19-18. Dr. Anwar reported in Molecular Autism that children with autism have increased oxidation damage markers. This and other chemical markers may be accurate in determining specificity for autism. (Note: It is known that oxidation damage can be reduced by Nrf-2 activators). (pubmed.gov, 29479405).

2-12-18. Dr. Delhey reported in Frontiers in Neuroscience that there is evidence that Autism is associated with abnormalities in metabolic pathways, such as the glutathione pathway. The autistic participants of this study all had poor glutathione metabolism and high oxidative stress. Taking a combination of vitamin B12 and a low dose of Folinic Acid had a significant effect on glutathione metabolism, and tetrahydrobiopterin (BH-4) by itself significantly reduced chronic oxidative stress. (Note: Nrf-2 activators increase glutathione and reduce oxidative stress). (pubmed.gov, 29483858).

10-18-17, Redox Biology. Dr. Frandsen reports that Autism and other neurological disorders are often started or exacerbated by accumulation of methylglyoxal in the body, and antioxidants function to protect the nervous system from it. Also, flavonoids (plant components) are effective in reducing levels of oxidative stress and inflammation in neural cells, which are at the core of the disease. (pubmed.gov, 29080525).

10-10-17, Frontiers in Molecular Neuroscience. Dr. Sarroulihe reported that Autism and other neurological problems (migraines, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, depressive disorder, epilepsy, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder) all share inflammation as a common cause. Anti-inflammatory therapy is the target for new treatments for Autism and other problems. (pubmed.gov, 29066951).

9-4-17, Journal of Neuroinflammation. Dr Prata and other researchers report that in recent years, evidence supporting a link between inflammation and neuropsychiatric disorders has been mounting. At the core of autism spectrum disorders is inflammation and oxidative stress. (pubmed.gov, 28870209)
